They also requested that the National Park Service continue coordinating with the U.S. For final review, the Commission requested that the National Park Service provide time frames for development of this comprehensive plan and for cultural landscape reports for the Martin Luther King, Jr. They supported the project’s goals while recognizing the importance of balancing historic preservation, natural resources, program needs, and impacts to visitors. In the future the National Park Service will complete a comprehensive plan for East and West Potomac Parks, to include the Tidal Basin, that considers alternatives to rehabilitate the landscape, address sea level rise, and protect and enhance the setting while accommodating visitors.Ĭommissioners noted the importance of the Tidal Basin and the iconic memorials located on its shores. The seawalls to be fixed were originally built from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The project focuses on the areas with the greatest need of repair and the highest level of settlement and erosion, resulting in overtopping twice daily. Over time the seawalls have significantly settled, leading to overtopping (water rising above the seawalls) and poor drainage. The existing sidewalk on top of the seawall along the Tidal Basin would be replaced to improve pedestrian access. ![]() Stone from the historic wall would be salvaged and reused. The existing stone masonry seawall would be removed and reconstructed along its current alignment and to its original historic functional height. Plans call for the repair and rehabilitation of approximately 6,800 linear feet of the seawall along portions of the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park.
